"Kolamba Sanniya Returns" Sinhala Film Analysis

Kolamba Sanniya Returns (2018) - Harsha Udakanda.

Kolamba Sanniya Returns is a 2018 Sinhalese comedy by Harsha Udakanda, acting as a sequel to the 1976 classical movie Kolamba Sanniya, which was directed by Manik Sandrasagara. The original Kolamba Sanniya was somewhat of a landmark in Sri Lankan cinema as it presented a humorous take on the clash between rural traditions and city sophistication. Kolamba Sanniya Returns tries to modernize that story while keeping the comic appeal of the movie intact.

1 Theme..........

1. Rural-urban conflict of culture and custom is portrayed once again in this film, as it was in the original, comparing and contrasting the rural sprawl of Sri Lanka to the hustle and bustle of the more urbane and materialist life in Colombo. This film, too, uses this contrast for comic effects; rural characters tend to come off as rather naive but honest, while city characters are depicted as urbane but rooted out from their traditional contexts.

2. Modernization vs. Tradition: This is a movie that takes the traditional versus modern theme and modernizes it to suit today's problems. In the 2018 version, urbanization and modern life are depicted as being fueled by mobile phones, social media, and all sorts of other modern technology; these things are often used to provide both comic relief and tension in the movie.

3 Family and Identity Family background versus new city life: The protagonist has to rediscover himself to the urban centres through his family background against which he is going to relate his city life experiences, and the themes emerge thereof of identity, belongingness, and the importance of family ties in an evolving society.

Plot........

The story evolves around a villager named Bandu and his urge to adjust himself into the urban surroundings of Colombo. The storyline is heavily borrowed from where a villager often finds himself facing uncomfortable and funny situations trying to adapt to city life, from bureaucracy to urban culture shock.

Kolamba Sanniya Returns- Bandu receives a pretty sum of money, which goes against the grain of these various urban characters trying to take advantage of his simplicity from rural upbringing. The poor man is torn between integrity and commission trying to make him fall apart while learning to balance his roots with modern city life.

3 Character Development....

Bandu: He is played by the same actor, Wilson Gunaratne, as a typically perfect "innocent villager" who is pushed into the modern environment that he cannot understand. Yet, his innocence and loyalty to family make him strong.
Supporting Characters: These are the city characters: businessmen, bureaucrats, socialites, representatives of different aspects of city life. Most of them are projected to be manipulative or opportunistic, diametrically opposite to the forthrightness of the villagers.

4 Humor and Satire.....

Situational Comedy:
Most of the humor of the film arises from the situation itself-the fish-out-of-water situation-which places Bandu in preposterous or unfamiliar situations, unable even to comprehend the fast-paced life in the city. This result in humors that are exaggerated and of a slapstick nature, typical of the genre.

Social Satire:
The movie showcases the humor in rural and urban lifestyles. As much as rural life has been made to appear simple and retrogressive, urban life has been made a laughingstock for being so materialistic and far from traditional values.

Cultural misunderstanding
Bandu's inability to fathom the subtlety of city life forms the key strand of comedy. His interactions with city-dwellers often create comic misunderstandings that reflect the cultural divide between the rural and urban worlds.

5 Visual Style and Cinematograph.......

Colorful, the movie reveals the vibrant nature of Colombo city life. Most of the time, the visuality contrasts the serenity of the rural settings with the frenetic chaos of the city.

The comic factor is grossly exaggerated by the director through body language and facial expressions, as was done in his earlier Kolamba Sanniya.

Sound and Music...

The movie's music and sound design play a significant role in enhancing the effectiveness of the humor. At times, traditional Sinhala music is pitted against contemporary upbeat tracks, which are elaborating on the contrast between Bandu's rural background and his urban surroundings. Comic instances are depicted with lighter, exaggerated sound effects, further amplifying the humor in the characters' actions.

7 Cultural Representation......

Kolomba Sanniya Returns is a film filled with contrastive dilemmas affecting Sri Lankan society. The movie shows that traditional values stemming from rural areas sometimes cannot coexist with modern urban life.

The movie points at certain ills affecting society, such as greed, social class differentiation, and emergent consuming culture at Colombo. The characters of rural origin appear not to cope well with such matters, thus acting as an avenue for understanding the plight of burden in adapting to modernity while maintaining the identity of a culture.
